Costa Rica at New Years may be one of my fondest memories, and these cute little monkeys played a very large part in that.
Every morning after making our way down to the breakfast buffet we'd gather a plate of fresh fruit and head out to the beach.
These monkeys made their way around to our resort usually every morning around 10:00am. Many of the younger monkeys were very open to coming down out of the trees to gather food from bystanders. These shots, however, took about an hour and half to get. As you can see from the second picture this particular monkey is a mother, and yes, that is a very newly born baby on her back. The baby is so small it doesn't walk on it's own, the mother carries it on her back everywhere she goes. Initially the younger monkeys would bring food back to her so she could remain in the tree, but over time most of them moved on. Clearly still hungry and only after a very, very cautious trip down the tree to the ground did she walk over to our beach chairs and take some fruit from our plate. We gave her space by leaving the fruit on the plate near the end of our chair where she stayed for maybe a minute or two before retreating to the tree.
This was likely a once in a lifetime experience for me, and I love even just remembering it as I type this out.
